Residential Roofing Options - What type of shingle to choose?

In the roofing world there are three types of fiberglass shingles, but first let’s talk about what makes them a fiberglass shingle vs. asphalt shingle. With traditional asphalt shingles, there is a natural product on the back of the shingles; typically, wood or paper. On the other hand, fiberglass shingles are backed with a much more durable and water-resistant fiberglass. When choosing a shingle for your roof, think of this: would you rather have paper protecting your family’s home or would you rather have a fiberglass, water resistant shingle?
Now that you know what makes a fiberglass shingle, let’s talk about the three different types of fiberglass shingles: three-tab, architectural, and designer.

three tab shingle

Entry Level Basic Shingle

Three-tab shingles are your basic, flat shingle. Three tabs of shingles are held together on a fiberglass backing, hence the name. These shingles are very affordable and have a clean, horizontal look. The downsides to this type of shingle is that their look does not provide as much interest and they are not as durable or heavy as the architectural or designer shingles which makes them easier to blow off or show hail damage.

architectural

Most Common & Very Durable

Architectural shingles are one of the most common fiberglass shingles that you may see. They are made with layers of shingles on the fiberglass backing which makes them much more durable than the three-tab. These shingles often come in more color options, provide a dimensional and more interesting look, and have a longer warranty than the three-tab. Architectural shingles have grown in popularity throughout the years and is what most homeowners are putting on their homes. They provide the durability that every homeowner wants while also giving the roof a dimensional and more expensive look.

designer shingle

The Most Durable

Designer shingles are your cream of the crop, affordable shingle. If you live in a period specific home, such as a colonial, and you cannot afford to replace your roof with slate tiles, designer shingles are perfect for you. These shingles are built like the architectural shingles but have even more layers to them which makes them heavier and more resistant to wind and hail damage. These shingles are cut to look like slate or cedar tiles while saving you thousands of dollars.
